Failure of the subprime-mortgage structure


The failure of the subprime-mortgage structure –

which started with higher-than-expected defaults,

led to hedge fund wipeouts, and then to mortgage broker bankruptcies –

might have been contained to only the subprime segment of the market.

But... the risk spread because of the financial engineering.
